Queen Mary University of London, a research team announced that caffeine activates a cellular mechanism that balances energy levels, aids DNA repair, and slows aging.
The international study examined yeast models that share fundamental biological similarities with human cells. Researchers observed that caffeine directly stimulates the AMP‑activated protein kinase (AMPK) system, a protein kinase activated by AMP that acts as a cellular fuel gauge and preserves metabolic equilibrium.
When cellular energy drops, AMPK triggers survival pathways, according to Dr. Charalampos Rallis, the study’s senior author. “The results show caffeine directly turns on this cellular switch,” he said. These findings imply caffeine could enhance DNA repair and contribute to age‑related health benefits.
